hey guys,
just fitted this xtreme dd tail kit today http://www.miracle-mart.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=80_204_152&products_id=3037
only had time after fitting for a 10 min flight after but the motor was really hot after that.is that normal for a dd tail motor?i have been using stock motors for the past 18 months and they never got anywhere as hot as this motor did today. orange44

I'm thinking to install one of theese on mine. How do you take off the stock motor mount from the boom?

the way i took mine off is not necessarily the easiest or best way but i got it off in the end.
i tried using a hairdyer to see if it would melt the glue at first(i`d heard of guys successfully doing that)but that was a waste of time on mine.
what i did was to cut all of the mount off except the part that was stuck onto the boom.i then carefully cut either side of the remaining mount and was able to use needle nose pliers to prise the the last bit off in two pieces.
like i said, probably be easier or better ways but it worked fine with no damage to the boom at all.
hope that helps but if i`ve not explained it too good let me know and i`ll try again orange74

I am hoping if I can take it off in 1 piece, without damaging the stock one.
I've been asking around, and no one know/can take off the stock motor mount in one piece. What most people do is cut the boom, so it will be shorter by around 1 inch

if you cut the boom the motor mount will still have a piece of the boom it in.
it`ll still be the same problem for you of trying not to damage the mount. orange44
i have heard of guys dipping the mount in boiling water to try and melt the glue but for what a new mount costs(plus i am now using the xtreme mount)most guys seem to just hack it off like i did

Yes, a DD tail drive motor would get hot. It is less efficient than a geared tail.
Personally, I would not bother with it.
While I have not tried it on HBFP (I converted mine eventually to a belt drive), I did use a dd on a smaller MIA BumbleBee heli (5th from the left in my signature), and I did not like it - the reaction time was much slower, the gyro would not hold, and the motors would die quickly. I installed a geared tail from Walkera 52, and the tail became perfect with a simple rate gyro and that same motor.

great,i`ve already fitted it now headbeat
i heard a lot of great things about a dd tail on another forum so that put the idea in my head to try one.i haven`t been able to try it properly yet but i hope it`ll be a success.
maybe it`ll be a case of a lesson learned orange78

had a couple of great flights with the new dd today, quite impressed with it so far.
i did notice the tail fin that came with it seemed to be wobbling a fair bit though.i took the fin off and it didn`t seem to make any difference to my hbfp.
does the tail fin actually do anything?i`m pretty sure it must do something but i didn`t notice any difference,it can`t just be cosmetic surely!
can anyone explain to me what it does,if anything.i think it may be a bit of resistance for the tail rotor but then i may be talking a load of bulls### orange80

Any vertical or horizontal tail fin is for stable forward flight.

If you're just hovering or putting around, then it doesn't do much of anything.

i`ve still got my horizontal fin on so maybe that`s why i can`t tell any difference with the tail fin off.i`m flying fff great without it,maybe it`s just my great flying skills compensating for it(NOT!!!) orange51

The real fins with substantial area would help stabilize forward flight. Those fins we typically put on our helis mostly serve to prevent prop strike on the ground.

So, how is the dd tail in comparison to the geared ?

hey sergeyk,it`s still early days yet as i`ve only had a few flights with the new dd tail.so far though i`ve been impressed with it,it seems less twitchy than the geared tail.
one thing that did happen that i`ve not experienced before is when the battery started dying the dd tail couldn`t keep up at all.
looked at all the vids and pics from FD`s funfly and i`m `SO JEALOUS` redface you guys and girls seemed to be having a blast,i would have loved to have been there.
i went to a local heli club earlier this year and they weren`t very welcoming at all,my little hbfp was "hindering my progress"!i needed to spend a lot of money on a new heli to be an `equal` to them but i aint got that kind of money,i`m more than happy with my hbfp orange71
