Subject: Esky 4in1 HBFP flipping out Sun Aug 23, 2009 6:37 pm
I made new skids out of metal rods then I took noticed my HBFP 4in1 started to flip out.
My specs: 72mHz HBFP everything is stock.....EXCEPT metal skids Batteries in transmitter is full
Procedure: All tabs on TX in centered.....throttle is bottom Turn on TX Connect battery to 4in1 4in1 blinks red then green then the problems begin.......
1. Sometimes it stays solid green then I'm ok 2. Other times it flashes green and when I go to unplug it, it flips out and the blades start to spin. (I'm not throttling up or anything) 3. If it stay green and my hand approaches the Heli so I can carry it, the blades spin crazy again
1. Could my hand be interfering with the signal? Never happened before 2. Could the 72mHz version be prone to interference from telephones, tv, router etc?

How do you have your antenna routed?

I imagine having the antenna wrapped around the metal skids is your problem. Try wrapping it around the tail boom along it's length. I think that will help. Let me know.

I unwrapped the antenna and re-wrapped it on the boom and it's still flipping out. Made sure it doesn't touch any metal parts
Now, When it stays a solid green I can throttle it up but once I reach full throttle the blades stop spinning. Then the 4in1 blinks red.
Other problems that happen sometimes: I set the swash plate level before connecting the lipo. Once I connect the battery the servos goes balistic. They crank in opposite directions.
Lipos are fully charged and so is the TX batteries.
Is it possible that the 4in1 went bad? What is the proper steps to trouble shoot? Or there is no set way? LOL

OK, look the antenna over goo to make sure ther isn't a break or bad spot in it. Also remove and reseat the Tx and Rx crystals. Before you replace them, bend the pin slightly toward each other so the crystal will fit tighter. Be sure to put thr crystal marked Tx in the transmitter and same for receiver. Also make sure everything is pluggen in good.

Did what you said with the crystals and also checked the antenna wire. Now the 4in 1 blinks a steady red and green
thanks for your help!

Here's what's going on:
HBFP all stock...I put the stock skids back on Tx is off and all trims are in the middle except throttle (down) before I plug the battery into the Rx. Then I turn on the Tx. I don't touch anything else unless to give it a little throttle.
Problems 1. 4in1 blinks red/green then blinks a steady red and green 2. When 4in1 stays a solid green, I hold the skids and move the throttle up. About 3/4 of the way up, the power cuts off and 4in1 turns red. 3. When I'm able to give full throttle the servos start to engage and the blades move in all direction...left, right, forward, back 4. Other times when i connect the battery to the Rx the servos start glitching uncontrollable
Checked 1. Crystals on both the Tx and Rx to make sure it's a tight fit. 2. Antenna wire on Rx made sure it has no nicks
I had to remove the main blades and only left the flybar on because the Heli flipped out and the blades whacked me in the arms. I might post a picture what a sledge hammer can do to a HBFP.

Oh man that's . It looks like 4in1 problem And it might be rx crystal problem

Should I try to replace the crystals first? Process of elimination?

I don't know Maybe you can borrow some crystal from someone? And if you buy new crystal MAKE sure you buy the same frequency (72.xx) crystal that is in tx. Or if you can't find it, buy any 72mhz crystals for both tx and rx

What is your advice? If the crystals aren't the problem.
1. Buy a new 4in1 for $45.00 delivered 2. Invest in a better Tx? Like the one Nuttz recommended....Exceed RC 2.4Ghz 6-Channel RC Helicopter Radio Transmitter+Receiver System (should come with a Rx) $65.00 delivered 3. Just scrap the old HBFP and buy the new HBFP V2
I kind of like the new Tx idea. Assuming it will work with multiple helis. Can't see buying a 4in1 for $45.00.
Please advise.
THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

It's a Tx/Rx problem for sure. The ESC/Gyro are isolated. When it starts flashing red and green, try putting your finger on top the crystal and wiggling it a little bit and see if anything changes. If that's the case, it may be a seating problem.
Yes, if you buy a 2.4Ghz system and upgrade, it will work with other helis. At that point, you're back to the same heli assuming the 4-in-1 works with the mod. If you get the new HBFPv2 you can use your current heli as a parts donor... servos, head parts, etc.

You could try to use your crystals in other TX and RX just to check it out. I had the same problem with a wasp v2 and I noticed that it was my receiver with problem.
If you decide to buy a new heli, I suggest HBFP v2, but you won't use all the parts of the HBFP v1 because the V2 has some mods in tail boom and body frame.
Best regards from Brazil !

Here is a video of one problem.
Tx has 4 bars lit up. Looks like only 2 in the video

the Exceed Tx is ok but if you want a Tx to use with lots of helis without any hassels a DX6i would be better, the Exceed Tx must be hooked to your comp to switch models. But the problem you have is very weird, but try this, this is something many people end up having to do to fix probs like yours. This is from a guy on heliguy
Cleaning the Tx pots (potentiometers)
Bugster wrote:
This procedure seems to help remove the problem of erratic servo movement with the standard Esky Tx. It appears the pots in the Tx become dirty and respond to cleaning with a number of fluids including WD40.
To clean the pots means removing the back from the Tx.
BEWARE. THIS COULD INVALIDATE THE WARRANTY so I take no responsibility for you doing it at your own risk.
Right now thats got the heavy bit out of the way ... remove the 4 screws (indicated by the red arrows below) holding the 2 halves of the case together and part them gently.
- there are cables connecting the 2 halves which must not be forced.
Then identify the 4 pots shown by red arrows below. They are the shiny bits under the little green printed circuit boards with the 3 solder blobs on.
Under the green printed circuit board fixed to each pot you will see a small hole (identified by the red arrow below). Apply a very small squirt of cleaner into this hole.
Then "work" the Tx sticks to and fro vigorously to their limits for 15 seconds each. Leave the back off the Tx for 30 minutes to allow any cleaner fluid to evaporate then carefully reassemble.
EDIT - ROV has made a good point below which I've added here:-
if you are using WD40, only use a VERY SMALL amount, I know you said this but if anyone uses WD40 they need to know that excess fluid can affect the plastic bits it comes into contact with. There are other products such as Electroclean which will do the job and not affect the plastic. Once the pots have been cleaned and worked as you suggested, you can also use a small amount of PTFE spray which will keep the pots moving freely.
Hopefully your jittery, unresponsive servos should now be fixed :)
Please feel free to tell me if I've missed anything here :)

Thanks Nuttz, but it didn't work. Here is another video that show the 4in1 and servo acting up.

Well it's been about a week and I got confirmation from MicroMike that my 4in1 is bad. I took it apart and looked for any indications but couldn't see or smell anything that could have fried. Mike can fix my 4in1 but here is the plan in the mean time.
I'm going to buy the Belt CP V2 (since it's available) and practice with that until the HBFP V2 becomes available at Xheli. Then I will buy the HBFP V2 and use my HBFP V1 as a donor. If Mike can fix my original 4in1 I will have 3 working Helis and 1 happy camper.
If I get the BeltCP V2 (2ghz) and HBFP V2 (2ghz) will I be able to connect it to the DX6i in the future?
Should I get it in FM version?
If I purchase the DX6i what else would I need to run both Heli's on it?.....extra rx?
This was my long term goal but I just made it shorter. [b]

If you want to use dx6i on belt cp better buy FM version and then install spektrum rx. It will be cheaper that way. And I think you should use honey bee fp with stock tx. It will be cheaper that way, and there are not many pros using dx6i on honey bee fp

I just ordered my HBFP V2
Can I use the 4in1 from the V2 on the V1?
That way I can still practice on the V1 without damaging the V2
Nuttcaze Admin
Subject: Re: Esky 4in1 HBFP flipping out Tue Sep 01, 2009 6:22 am
you're less likely to damage the V2 then the V1 but yes you can swap the 4in1 to the V1, but why
just kidding, but did you see the vid of my HBFP V2 dropping from 12ft and not get any damage, thats what I call tough
My HBFP V1 is still good aside from the 4in1. It seems such a waste to not get more flying time out of it. So I'd rather practice with that and "go for broke". Once I can put it on the "Wall of Fame" as my 1st Heli and be proud of the damage, then I'll be ready to wreak the V2
I know I said this earlier but when you have a new heli you're kind of gun shy.

I remember having the same problem with the TX and receiver from E sky. I had the 4 in 1 and at one moment my Honey Bee FP took off like a rocket. Went straight up for about 50 meters and came back to earth like a dead bird. Afther rebuilding the heli I bought Spektrum DX6i and for the heli the 3 in 1 from E sky. That worked better. But I found that the Picco board was working better. So now I fly my HB FP with DX6i and never had a problem again. My HB FP is very stable. To let it preform even better I replaced the tail rotor with the one from Piccolo. (direct drive) Now I just love my HB FP. I will make a picture tomorrow and put it on the forum to show you.
