| I thought I'd start a new thread, so as not to do so much off topic stuff on Suriano's excellent E-Smart challenges thread, that we're all so fond of. This is the first one I've started, so if there's a better way to clarify what its intention is, let me know, fellas. All general stuff can go here. Questions, updates, what's bugging you, parts and prices, new discoveries, E-Smart Experiment emails, and what's generally great about the SMarty. If y'all think this is a good idea, just post something here and get it on your watch list. Here goes! Mick PS And as an added piece of personal info about me, I'll answer the burning question of why I would choose an avatar of Owen Wilson to represent myself here on one of MY favorite web haunts. The answer is simple. If I were to grow my hair long, dye it blonde, and change the face ... (quick breath) ... and wear a hawaiian shirt, I wouldn't look anything like that picture. Of course, neither Suriano's mushroom, nor Nuttzy's Pac Man lookin' thing can say that.

| ... today I'm expecting my E-Smart carbon fiber edition. Nice! Also, I wrote to microheli about the possibility of ordering the plastic links in quantity, and the owner wrote me back playing dumb, kinda ... Know what I mean by this? After a polite request to find out how large an order would be required, he wrote me back and said, Hi Mick, We only have 1 upgrade main gear. Thanks, HUY.I politely wrote back, saying I was unsatisfied by his reply, and reiterated the question. I'll post back and let you all know what he says. I fly tomorrow, weather permitting! Ciao for Now, gentlemen; Mick | |

| Well since you mentioned it......I make glass jewely. Beads and focal pendants. One of my favorite and most lucrative pendants is the Mushroom. Here is one of my witch cap orange and yellow mushrooms.... BTW Mick have you seen the thread Marc has for the plastic links? Those are what I would order for mine. My Esmart should be fixed this weekend. Hope to get some flights in before my fingers are too cold. | |

My Esmart should be fixed this weekend. Hope to get some flights in before my fingers are too cold. COOL! I also do woodworking as my second hobby, and one of the things I like to make (haven't done one for awhile) is kaleidoscopes. Maybe I'll post a couple of pics of some of them later. Donnie D

Next best thing to NOT having to cut them in half, grind or cut them down, tap a thread, find an appropriate link screw, and ... Hey, sounds like fun.

| Man..major bummer. I received all my parts today and started to build the esmart back up. Thats when I noticed my feathering shaft is bent. Ouch, I know that they are sold out everywhere. I did start a wanted thread hoping that someone would be willing to kindly help me out and give up one of there spares. We will see.
If I have to I will wait untill Micro heli makes them but I got to say I wouldnt hold my breath on that. I was really hoping to get some more flight time on the esmart before the cold weather sets in. I have a hard time fly'n when my fingers get cold.
I really dont want to use the hurricane head again so dont know if I will use it unless I have no choice. Like if nobody sells me one or microheli doesnt make them.
It was good fly'n weather here today, really nice day...........

| Well I have worked on the esmart for 10 hours today and still cant get it to stop shaking. I just cant figure it out. The problem is I will get it shake free and think it is fixed and then without a reason start shaking again. So the problem comes and goes for reasons I cant figure out.
I worked on everything and then bam It flew great after adjusting the belt and main blade grip tension. I flew it out back in the parking lot for a few to make sure and it was solid, no shakes. So I put a fresh battery in and went to the park. As soon as the heli's skids left the ground it started shaking so bad I thought the canopy was going to get tossed off. So now I am really pissed off. I took it back home and shimmed the mainshaft to get a tighter fit. Took it out to the parking lot and and when the skids left the ground it was solid again. After about 3 seconds of shake free hover it went back into its massive shaking again.
I guess I cant say anything bad about the esmart as a good heli for others but mine is,always has been, and always will be a peice of crap. Honestly at this point I dont know why I bother with it anymore.
At this point I cant say its something I am doing wrong either because I have tried tight belt, loose belt, new belt, old belt, new pulleys, tight gear lash, loose gear lash, new motor, old motor, tighten the blade grips, loosen the blade grips, new main bearings, steel main bearings, ceramic main bearings,4 sets of tail blades,3sets of main blades, hurricane head, stock head, new bearing blocks, new frame, new gears, new mainshafts, new oneway assy, just about every part and every adjustment from one end to the other.
My EXI 450 can have a loose belt or a tight belt, Straight frame or bent frame, new bearings or old bearings, tight gear lash or loose gear lash, etc.....AND IT ALWAYS FLYS.........WTF. For me personally, the esmart has been the worst heli I have had. I will be having nightmares about that stupid thing for awhile.
Good news is that I should have an extra $1000 a month coming in now so heli shopping I go.............

| Nice bonus cash, Surry; I can't say much about the SMarty yet. I can say, though, that it's been in the air hovering around and it is beautiful, solid, and smooth as glass. It does go through a shuddering stage as it's spooling up, but after transitioning to higher head speeds, it goes away entirely. Even the vibration that it does get is much less than those I've seen (on youtube) that didn't put beefy skids on theirs. In fact, one of the guys (the experts) down at our field said the head speed seemed low, but he got his tach and clocked it at over 2000, with plenty of head room on the throttle curve. Silky smooth. My problem was, I had left tight ball linkages all throughout the head assembly, only opening them up a little, for fear of losing longevity. Thought they'd break in. But Kenny, the other guy nice enough to help me out down there said it was imperative that they were all smooth as glass, and we could start from there. Well, this morning I got them all smooth as glass, but now for some reason the rudder control got screwed up. I had perfect endppoints set on them yesterday, but now the servo was hitting both ends hard, and then worked only very slowly in one direction, normal speed in the other. Kenny changed just about every setting on the radio. Maybe he did something that I can fix. But that's the news for now. I had to steal the large ball link set from my CF version, but I ordered 4 sets of the Mikado links yesterday, so I should be able to make them work. BTW, to anyone who wants to know, after trying all the guy's suggestions for sizing the huge links (heating the ball with a soldering iron, spinning the ball on a drill bit, etc.), I took the ball off the flybar, scuffed it up with an exacto knife, slid it onto my 1.5mm hex wrench (from the EXI tool kit from Xheli), and grub screwed it tight. Then I took my ball link sizer (also from the kit) and stuck it into the small end of the link. Twisting the links so they're barely offset, I used the two tools at once, the one pulling against the other as I rolled them like bicycle pedals with my hands. This was highly effective, because it allows you to put tension on the rough parts so they actually take material off the link. About 30 seconds of work did more than two hours worth of work with any other methods, INCLUDING manually scraping with an exacto on the link (don't try that, it doesn't work). Plus you size both links at once. Presto! Then the finishing touch: use a piece of fine steel wool on the ball, and in a minute or two it'll shine like a mirror. Gives a beautiful, glassy smooth feel to the links, and doesn't seem to affect the link's ability to stay on the ball. Nice! Surry, If I end up with all the problems you've had, I'll pull my hair out and hang myself. I think you got a lemon (a flying and vibrating one!), but I mean I don't think they're all that way. Already mine seems wonderful. Just need to fix that last issue, and even that was working perfectly just yesterday. Here's to $1000/mo for helis!!! Mick

| I just got this today. Thank you very much for your email and your concern about E-samrt part, I am sorry E-smart has been stop produce for a long time, though we have plan to reproduce it in next year, now there are no stock for it's parts and we can only reproduce them in next year. I will submit your demands to our boss and rush the reproduce plan but I am sorry this year the possibility is slim, anyway I will keep you informed once we reproduce it. | I may need to combine these helis. But if I do, I want to combine them on the CF frame and all those nice parts. So a build is in order, then if parts are needed, they can migrate towards the PRO. FD, what cyclic servos are you using on yours? Reason I ask is, I got some cheap ones from China $35 for all four. They look perfect on paper, and the reviews on the actual website were all great, so I tried them. TowerPro MG995 Digital Metal Gear Coreless Motor Double Bearing .17 @ 4.8v .13 @ 6v High Torque Sounds great, but I did some more poking around at other sites for reviews, and a lot of guys said maybe one out of four were good, and that something wore out quickly in them so they would lose the ability to center properly. I need some NICE digital servos. I would try the one's Nuttsy likes, the HS422's, but they're not digital, and I have a digital tail servo. Don't think you can mix and match that way. Mick PS Anyone else with an idea here? How about the Blue Bird Servo?

Hey, you are talking about esmart servos right? These servos that you posted link to are for 450 size heli. I am using these blue bird servos for head and this servo for the tail on my ES600. They work great for me!

| Hey Mick.. I'm using Spektrum DS821's I use these on both my "E" and "G" on the "G" I have one on the tail as well. These are entery level digital. The first set came with my DX7 but they worked so well I got a second on EBAY and you can find LOTS of sets of 4 there..Going price is about 30-40 for 4!!!! I'm trying to get a third set now in fact.. I also got a set of the super cheap Tower Pro STD. digital's I forget the number but I got them.. I must say there HUGE!!!! And heavy So IO don't know what I'll do with them.. I really like the 821's ALOT!!!! And I agree with you about using the CF as the main heli and the Metal for parts!!!! The frame on the CF is sooo strong I really can't believe it.. I've crashed mine 3-4 times and never even like scratched the frame!!! Very stiff Too!!!! | |

| Subject: Fatdaddy ... Tue Oct 27, 2009 3:02 pm | |
| .... thanks.
I'll check out the servos you suggest.
I have the Tower Pros, too. They are heavy and built like a tank, but the reviews on them were mixed. As of now, I suspect they will not suffice.
When I think of paying $35 for 4 of them (Tower Pro MG995), and then I try to find the best cyclic servos available at $139 each!!!!!!!!! (JR8717 Ultra Speed) to $200 each (JR DS8717HV High Voltage Ultra Speed Cyclic Servo), I think it's just too rich for my blood to go for those right now. One servo is the price of the CF kit!
I'm trying to do this on a reasonable budget. I like the idea of the Blue Birds, but they need to be ordered from China with a $30 shipping fee.
That's why I may take your advice. I'll let you know if I find and/or buy them.
Update: I checked on ebay. They look like micro servos. Are they STANDARD size?
20mmX40mm
Take Care, and ...
Thanks Again;

Freakin crazy!!!! Its gonna be a long, long time before I would even notice any diff.. Just do an EBAY search on DS821 and a bunch will come up.. prices starting at .99 for 4.. happy bidding..!!

| one thing to think about when choosing your cyclic servos, the faster your cyclic servos are the more responsive the heli will be, if you fly 3D then thats great but if you don't fly 3D then you may end up trying to "tame" it down a bit. I use the HS-422's because they are slow and that makes my heli REALLY easy to fly. Its not overly responsive so I've never needed to do things like add expo or lower my swashmix's to make my heli more controllable, it'll hover by itself . But thats just me, I like slow and stable flying right now, not fast and overly responsive. | |

| Subject: Re: General Chat ... Thu Oct 29, 2009 5:44 pm | |
| You could say that earlier My esmart is like rocket now But I like it. I also added 8% expo, so I could fly slowly sometimes. But to fly slowly I guess I also need to lower swash mix. But I like how esmart flies now. Stable hover and fast and easy controlled FFF I have new video flying esmart, I am going to upload it a little bit later | |

| Subject: Blade Strike! Sat Oct 31, 2009 7:26 pm | |
| My Friends; I regret to inform you that, after running three batteries through my E-Smart just staying a foot off the pavement, I had a blade strike today. Good bye carbon fiber blades, fly bar, paddles, who knows what else. This from losing it from about two inches off the ground. I did everything in my power to be extra careful, but I can't seem to get going. In hind sight, I should've just jumped it into the air, and hope that my sim training would take over. I'm just glad I have the CF version waiting to rebuild. But it grieves me to know that I wrecked a beautiful, smooth running, NO mysteries, metal edition. Feels like a death in the family. Or a car accident. Why did I keep trying? Why not just walk back to the table, like I was going to? Et Cetera ... Now I have what is truly a parts heli, and my second build should be better and less confusing than the first. I've got a ton of creative ideas already. But I can't seem to get a helicopter in the air, Goddammit!!!! I feel like a 40 y.o. virgin! I won't say here what that analogy says about sims! I'm ashamed of myself. I was SO close to having it tuned up and ready. She was so smooth, and so beautiful. Suriano would've loved her. I learned a ton about all the radio settings and switches, and how they interact, though. Hope this is my last bout with NOOB-itis. Oy, vay! What a hobby! Mick PS May she rest in peace.

| I am sure I will say what you already know but I cant help it.... You should have been fly'n it higher off the ground. That low is bad news as you learned. Like you said though, you learned alot so far and the next will be better. You do have to learn to trust your sim experience though. Once you trust yourself and get it up, you will be fly'n just like you do in the sim.
I will be doing a new build with the Thunder Tiger Raptor E550 in a couple of weeks. I might post it here as I think the guys on this forum are open to other heli brands. My Esmart was never meant to fly so I am done with that. Moving on to something else.
Anyway good luck with the next build. I do think like Nuttcaze said you could rebuild. I dont think you will find the parts, like the feathering shaft I can guarantee is bent.

I will still be flyin both my "E" & "G" but the writing is on the wall for the "E" at least.. I've also heard that the "G" is also gonna be much differant so same may be true for it..!! I think you will see, everyone will at some point need to start to move to other brands.. Even though I have spares and a complete CFPro kit spare I'm still going for the OUTRAGE!!
